Digital Heroes
Director at the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate, Dr Charmaine Gauci shares her experience on how the Internet has affected her family and her own daily activities both on a personal and professional level.
She recalls how on the first day of attending a computer course she “… just kept looking for the power button and I couldn’t find it. When I compare where I was then to where I am today, I realise how far I have come along. Attending basic computer courses has certainly helped me along this journey.” Dr Gauci also stressed the fact that people should not be afraid of technology and should take that first step towards a digital lifestyle.
Dr. Gauci concludes by giving an insight into her favourite online application, “Since I don’t drive, I find online supermarkets really useful as I order my shopping during the day and by the evening, it is conveniently delivered to my doorstep”.
The highly energetic and popular TV presenter Valerie Vella, shares her views on the Internet and how, although very conservative by nature, she still managed to make the first step towards a digital lifestyle with great success. “I resisted the switch to a smartphone for a very long time....however today I cannot imagine myself leaving the house without it or without my tablet”.
Valerie explains how in the past TV scripts used to be sent to her via the traditional mail, thus restricting any changes she may wish to make. “Nowadays, I receive them by email wherever I am, and I can add comments, highlight important sections and personalise them,”. Furthermore, given the fact that she is often abroad because of her job,, , she is still able to maintain close contact with her TV colleagues and remain updated about any important changes in casting or scripts – all thanks to technology.
Valerie’s favourite online application is the ‘check-in facility’ as “… it enables me to choose my favourite spot on the plane, well in advance”. She also added, “Although abroad often, I am very pleased that I still manage to keep close contact with my mother and nephews through Skype”.
Wine expert and TV presenter Josef Bonello, shares his experience on how he embraced a digital lifestyle and started to use the Internet. “It took me a really long time to realise that technology indeed offered a great deal of benefits. I thought that technology was just for the young and therefore it would be useless for me to learn how to use it”.
He admitted how, “Nowadays my life is much more organised”. He also explains his relationship with technology at the workplace “I am in close contact at all times with both my clients, as well as with my suppliers and I can be updated with the latest news or developments in real time”. He also declares how “research is better and easier by logging onto the Internet for the most recent information, rather than having to physically look up books which are sometimes outdated”.
