Malta participates in Get Online Week 2012

Start using the Internet today – don’t waste more time! is the slogan chosen for this years’ activities, which will be held in Valletta. Malta is one of 50 countries across Europe, Eurasia and Africa, that are organising activities to mark ‘Get Online Week’, which is an initiative of the Telecentre-Europe AISBL and supported by the European Commission together with a number of other international organisations. Get Online Week 2012 is being run in parallel with the European Commission eSkills week campaign. Locally, the campaign kicks off on Saturday 24th March, which will include an exhibition stand in Valletta and will run until Wednesday 28th March.

The public is encouraged to visit the stand in Republic Street, Valletta where a number of computers will be made available for use, thus presenting the opportunity to discuss any difficulties with qualified tutors who will be present during the events.  Interested individuals may also apply for basic and more advanced ICT courses, which are being organised by the MCA.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage more people to get online and start using the Internet, particularly those individuals over 45 years’ of age. By getting online and acquiring the ICT skills and competences, one can participate more actively as a member of the digital community, become more independent and enjoy improved employability.

The MCA believes that ICT acts as a social equalizer by offering the tools that enable the more vulnerable individuals to participate fully in the community. ICT offers everyone an opportunity to lead a richer life.  National efforts should ensure that ICT serves as a channel conducive to social cohesion.
