Over the years, we have come across countless definitions of e-Commerce. Narrowly defined, e-Commerce involves the buying and selling of products and services over the Internet. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! e-Commerce is also about conducting business processes in a networked electronic environment, encouraging transformation of internal systems, leading to efficiencies in terms of cost, responsiveness to customers, tailor-made offers and the potential emergence of new products and services.
Today’s Internet technologies offer entrepreneurs a myriad of advantages and opportunities that simply did not exist before. Indeed, with the proliferation of the Internet, online trade is growing exponentially. e-Commerce, undoubtedly, breaks down the physical barriers normally associated with off-line trading, by revolutionizing the way businesses conduct their affairs. Traders, no longer bound by time or geography, have ubiquitous access to both their clients and business partners.
Local businesses (SMEs and retailers) need to fully understand the value that e-Commerce begets and exploit the ability of telecommunications and information technologies to capitalize on economic efficiencies. Understanding the implications and contemporary developments is key to the successful adoption of e-Commerce. Businesses simply cannot afford to ignore the concept of e-Commerce!!
During this conference we shall be analysing:
- the building blocks that underlie the core notion of ‘e-readiness’ and examining whether Malta’s digital environment is conducive to foreign investment.
- The effects of e-Commerce on the supply chain – the efficiencies that can be gained, especially by micro-enterprises, which constitute the majority of businesses in Malta.
- The role of Government as an enabler and driver of e-Commerce.
This conference will aim to address the following questions:
- Is Malta prepared/ready to exploit the potential of e-Commerce and to reap its benefits?
- What fundamentals should be at the base of an effective e-Commerce take-up?
- Is B2B a reality for businesses in Malta? Are there any stumbling blocks stalling the effective take-up of B2B e-commerce in Malta? Are we doing enough?
- Why hasn’t e-Commerce flourished despite Malta’s promising broadband penetration?
- What can be done to make Malta an attractive place for foreign direct investment in e-Commerce?
This conference is aimed at:
- Businesses in general, including manufacturers, retailers, suppliers etc.
- Government agencies
- Financial institutions
- Electronic communications service providers
- Software developers
- Students
More details will be made available shortly.
