GetSmarter - maximising the use of your smartphone

The Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has launched GetSmarter - a new initiative that is aimed at helping mobile users maximise the use of their smartphone. This initiative is being undertaken with the collaboration and support of the three leading mobile operators, GO plc, Melita and Vodafone Malta. The training, also open to individuals who are planning on purchasing a smartphone, will be offered free of charge and will help users identify different ways of connecting with people, how to browse the Internet over their smartphone and will give an overview of other interesting features available on their mobile device.

This project is another step forward in the MCA’s drive to minimize the digital divide and fully complements the numerous initiatives it has rolled out over the past years. According to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2016, which is a composite index developed by the commission to assess the development of EU countries towards a digital economy and society, Malta currently ranks 11th out of the 28 EU member state. In terms of mobile technology, whilst the local mobile penetration rate has long exceeded the 100% mark, mobile data usage is still lagging behind the EU average. This is an important feature in mobile technology and it is important for subscribers to know the benefits, and how to use it responsibly. This training programme is specifically aimed to assist users in getting the most out of their mobile device and technology that it offers. In order to facilitate participation, the MCA has set up the sessions at different times during the day, at its various Community and Technology Learning Centres (CTLCs) across Malta and Gozo.

Malta’s ICT objectives are guided by the Europe 2020 strategy initiatives and the Digital Malta Strategy. Digital Malta reflects the Government’s vision to have Malta prosper as a digitally enabled nation in all sectors of society by 2020, especially when one considers today’s reality, that technology is a key player for efficiency and less bureaucracy.

During the press conference held this morning, the Hon. Dr Emanuel Mallia, Minister for Competitiveness and Digital, Maritime and Services Economy, emphasised the importance of the use of smartphones as an efficient channel of communication. ‘The advancement in mobile technology over the years has resulted in an always connected society. Information, news, products and services are all available at the click of a button, irrespective of time or place. It is therefore important that no one lags behind, that every individual has equal opportunity to fully participate in this connected society.  With the widespread availability of technology and the respective devices, we need ensure that individuals truly maximise the potential that lies at their fingertips,’ concluded the Minister.

These sessions shall be offered free of charge. The general public is invited to call the MCA on the project’s hotline 2125 5495 to apply to participate in these sessions, or fill in the online application available at http://www.mca.org.mt/getsmarter.
